In 1933 Freemasons Hall in Great Queen Street London was completed as a memorial to the Freemasons who died on active service in the Great War. The above photographs are on the official website of the United Grand Lodge of England and are used with permission.
In the impressive building is the Memorial Shrine which commemorates 3225 brethren. Already a difference to the 3064 listed in the 1921 book. As the research continued it became clear that there are probably about 3400 who should be commemorated. Also about 20% of the information in the 1921 book is suspect - errors of spelling, rank, surname, forename - and had to be resolved. As a test we checked data for which there was plenty of corroborative evidence - VC winners. Some brethren who had won the VC were omitted completely and some were listed but with no mention of their VC. Some even had their surnames spelt incorrectly and if the data of a VC winner was wrong how reliable would the data be for the others?
